Writing songs and telling truth

Matt Hopper

Matt Hopper has travelled many paths in life with a steadfast goal to write great songs and tell the truth. His music blends jammy spacey guitar work with honest lyrics that explore themes ranging from constant evolutionary change to emotional fallout, as well as simple everyday observations and the joy of life.

His life in music includes voracious devouring of almost every genre that started with vinyl and includes cassette tapes, compact discs, and MP3s. As a music director for two radio stations, a music journalist and photographer, and with twenty years spent as a troubadour, Hopper blends thousands of musical ideas and is creating works of art he will leave behind long after he is gone. His songs have won awards, appeared in films, documentaries, and commercials, and have been recorded and performed by major label artists. His body of work began in the late 90s when he purchased enough gear to make his own music studio in Anchorage, AK. He formed The Roman Candles around that time, and he continues to lead the band twenty years later.

He has shared the stage with Dr. John, Todd Snider, The Head and the Heart, The Waterboys, Everclear, Cold War Kids, Gin Blossoms, Cameron McGill, Lucky Fonz III, Denitia, Richard Swift, Damien Jurado, Peter Piek, Jared James Nichols, Evan Dando The Lemonheads, Leslie Stevens, Page McConnell, Portugal. The Man and many more.

His countless solo and band tours have won over fans from all over the world as he has performed for humble audiences in living rooms up to 5,000-seat amphitheaters, theater stages, and good old-fashioned sweaty rock clubs. He cites Tom Petty, Pink Floyd, and Van Morrison as influences and currently resides in Portland, OR, USA.
