Currently mid-tour working on our next album "Grand Ole Hopry" at a place called Spanky's. The band on this tour is a mix of old, new and someone in between...i.e. Garfinkel on bass, Fust on drums and Daste on the pedal steel. We also have Angela Oudean from the wonderful Barefoot on fiddle, Kullen Fuchs on accordion and trumpet, and Cameron McGill on those ivory ticklers. Also some AMAZING singers coming in to lend a voice to this project! I am so excited to be working on it finally. We have a bit more touring up north starting next week, then making the long trip home to Boise for the always exciting Treefort Music Festival. Then I'm hopping the Atlantic ocean to tour in Europe again. Better buy my ticket soon! Hasta la vista, baby.

While most people are getting pumped up for Valentine's Day, I'm busy celebrating my birthday all month with trips to Oregon to rehearse with my band for the next tour, Seattle to record a song I co-wrote with Eric Tollefson & Josiah Johnson, and then back to Boise to kick off the tour on the 13th. We're going all the way to Nashville. Daste on steel, Garfinkel on upright bass, Fust on drums and yours truly on guitars. Grand Ole Hopry here we come. - Matt p.s. got a few more shows in Europe in Switzerland.

Back in Idaho, planning out the year. Promoting "High Hopes" slowly, working on pressing up "Husky" on compact disc. Aiming for Nashville for Grand Ole Hopry in early March. Euro tour on the horizon. USA tour in the works. Alaska in July.

Where are you? Hello. I'm in Alaska currently!
Where are you? I am on the Internet!
Who are you? Hopefully a music lover.
What do you sound like? I sound like this, I guess? You tell me!?!
What do you look like? Well, go in for a closer look!
Where can I see you in concert? Grab a friend, plan a date.

let me know if i can get you anything?
another glass of agua? h2o? water?
i like this no frills website, don't you?

and Instagram.
How do I think Matt Hopper's "High Hopes" and Bruce Springsteen's "High Hopes" compare?
Well, thanks for askin' - well, since I haven't heard #BSPRINGS album yet *(Boss' record doesn't come out until Jan) all I can say is, does HIS album have an entire verse about #MATTHOPPER? #HIGHHOPES #CHEERS #BRUCESPRINSTEEN #3SYBLS
I used to play soccer, but now a man who goes by our shared, mutual namesake (#MATTHOPPER) has taken Google's top search prize - the coveted "coolest guy with this name" profile. I must destroy him. On the field. Toe to toe.
I need to go check out a guitar amplifier someone in Homer, AK told me I should check out.

p.s. I think 2014 is going to be rad. So nice to be in Alaska, but will be ringing in the new year in downtown #BOISE #IDAHO for the 1st Annual Idaho Potato Drop. See you in Nashville, yee haw, see you in Europe, see you in the USA.

Bouquet (1010 W. Main St. Boise, ID)

Click on the album cover above to stream the record and/or download a digital copy, or follow the link below if you would like to pay for a compact disc to be sent to you in the mail. Really hope you like it! - MH

Just returned from a trip to Alaska, where I had a chance to perform in Seward, Soldotna, Homer and Anchorage. It was a good time, marred by some let downs, but ultimiately turned into something good. I am in talks with a few venues about a return trip this winter to officially release my new records. Will keep you posted. In the meantime, I'm back in Boise and we just played the excellent Hyde Park Street Fair which is pretty much one of the best things you can play in Boise. We got some love in the Idaho Statesman for it and look forward to playing it again in the future. On deck a solo and full band journey to our neighbor state Utah to play in Salt Lake City, a return to First National in Pocatello, my get away gig at Lava Hot Springs, and a local gig with two of my favorite out of state songwriters - Cameron McGill and Jay William Henderson. Next month I will be on tour with the wonderful songwriter Freddie Stevenson as his backup guitarist and singer as we open for The Waterboys. I will be with them on tour from San Francisco, CA all the way to St. Paul, MN. The new album "High Hopes" should be in my hands within the month, I'm so excited! The other album is currently being wrapped up and I should have news on that soon. Sounds like my fall is off to a great start, hope yours is too.

In a blog titled "9 Alaska Acts You Should Listen to Now" Paste Magazine Blogger Taylor Kane had this to say about Hopper: "Although this songwriter recently relocated to Idaho, Matt Hopper cut his teeth in our most northern state, which would lead to the wiry, blues-flavored tracks on the 2011 album Jersey Finger. Hopper is a Tom Petty dead-ringer on “Send/Receive,” and he spends the rest of Jersey Finger drumming up nostalgia for listeners of many generations."

One big Boise show this month, on the 10th, at The Knitting Factory with Utah's great The North Valley and Jared James Nichols. Join this event on Facebook! You can purchase tickets through that site. In other news, this was supposed to be our new CD release party but it's not looking like they will be done in time, but we're getting very close to finishing "High Hopes" and hope to have it out by our next Boise show. We're super stoked about the other bands playing with us that night. Also we are wrapping up recording on "Husky" very soon as well, just need to do some horn work. That's two new albums for you folks with no Kickstarter necessary. I don't know about you, but I'm getting kind of sick of those things. Everybody and their mother seems to be making a new album and wanting help. Granted, I got a lot of help from my friends on these records...ahhh. I'm going to shut up. In more personal news, I am going to be working at the Alaska State Fair and doing a couple shows while I'm up there as well. Check the TOUR DATES for all the details including the grand opening party for Anchorare Community Works and a show with Quiet Life. Hope you are enjoying your summer very much, because it's almost over. Piper Pub already has a fall seasonal beer on tap. Uh oh.

JULY 2013

Had a fun little run of dates through California, Arizona and now we're back in Boise to open for Journey Unauthorized and Ty Herndon this week for Northwest Ribfest 2013. July 4th we are playing the Hailey, ID Freedom Fest Block Party. We've also been invited to play McMenamin's Birthday party in July at the Edgefield and have a Wed night Residency in Boise at Tom Grainey's the last three Wed of the month, including a gig with Arklife from Denver, CO. In August we have our CD release party on the 10th at the Knitting Factory. Really excited it's finally summertime and we hope to see you at a show.

JUNE 2013

Oh baby, June is almost here. I've got gigs lined up in California, Arizona, and Idaho this upcoming month. And my new album is almost finished, it's called "High Hopes" and I hope to have everything ready to go in the next couple of months and I couldn't be more excited. That's about all the news for the month of June. July is seeing us playing in Idaho for 4th of July then a couple gigs in Oregon area, some camping, and a residency in Boise at Tom Grainey's. This summer is going to be over before we know it. Get out and enjoy some fine weather.

April Residency announced in Portland, OR at Al's Den

New albums coming this year!

New videos up on our stream.

I'm back in Idaho after a whirlwind adventure up to Alaska to work for the summer, play a bunch of gigs with my bandmates up there, and then work on a new album with Paul Jacks in Anchorage. We got about 80% done with the record before I had to leave and I'm looking forward to letting it marinate and take a breather from it during the holidays. I will be in Arizona for the next two weeks playing a few shows and mainly just hanging out hoping to catch some much needed sun.

Worked with Bryan Garfinkel at his home studio last week bringing about 8 songs for "Husky" much closer to completion. We are working on mixes for that record now and I hope to wrap up both records in Jan/Feb if all goes well.

Our NYE show has been cancelled. I am not sure if there will be any more gigs booked this year.

Much love to you all. Thanks for checking in on the site.

I'll be in Boise this weekend playing with The Roman Candles at:
Tom Graineys w/ Jeff Crosby & The Refugees on Saturday night 10 p.m. $3
and Hyde Park Street Fair on Sunday 3:30 p.m. FREE

Hope to see some friends while I'm am back for a very short visit to the City of Trees!

NEWS on 9/3/2012
I have some news for you!

Click on that big triangle and hear my version of Kris Kristofferson's "Jody & The Kid" that is coming out on vinyl. TWO BIG FAT PIECES to be exact. Double vinyl. 2xLP. Thanks to a guy named Mike Dixon of PIAPTK Records in Olympia Washington who called me up and asked me to record a song for the project. I recruited my bluegrass buddies in Boise to make the recording happen. They are known as Reilly Coyote. Anyway, this compilation is currently in limbo of being pressed unless enough people pre-order the album, so please, click here to read more about the project and find out how you can help.

In other news, I did some recording with Kullen Fuchs a few weekends ago and we got lots of cool parts down for some songs off of the rock and country record. Kullen is pretty amazing on the trumpet, wait till you get to hear what he did!

I've got a few shows coming up this month and am going to start planning a good little run for November before I shove off to Seattle in early December to produce a record. Hope all is well out there with you!

NEWS on 8/5/2012
It's August, which in Alaska means goodbye summer. Time is flying by...I am at the 1/2 way mark in my 6-month contract for my job in Palmer. It's a very tedious job that allows for ample day dreaming and thinking. Kind of like being on tour, except I'm mostly touring people's yards and properties. Here's the news:

I am set to record in November with Paul Jacks (of Smile Ease) a piano-based record. That is right, not only am I attempting a country record and a rock record, but now a piano record and also a collection of instrumental jams that will probably be released under the name "Drop On Hop". Ambitious! I know! Good thing Paul is an accomplished piano player and will be helping me deliver the goods. I mean, I can play piano a little bit and I wrote these songs on a piano, but he's a really good player, so I'm going to let him handle the recordings. I will be adding some guitar and bass to it, but it will primarily have a keyboard driven sound.

I have a very good friend coming to visit from Austin, TX, the one and only Mr. Kullen Fuchs, who is the man on trumpet and various other instruments. We are doing some solo shows together in Homer and Carlo Creek. Hoping to add an Anchorage show as well.

We will be a special guests on KDLL 91.9 FM this Saturday (8/11)from 9-12 with DJ Eric Price so if you're in the Kenai area, tune in.

Here's hoping 2013 will be full of touring madness!

NEWS on 5/12/2012
I am living in Alaska again in the Matanuska Susitna Valley where I grew up, working as a meter reader for the local electric company. It's a good job that pays well and will allow me to save up enough to finish up and release my next two records. I am still fundraising for Grand Ole Hopry (see below) and your support helps a lot, but what I realized after two months is that I can't simply wait around for other people to save me from my financial woes, I need to work for it myself. It is a repetitive and physically demanding job...I am walking about 7 hours a day M-F going into people's yards reading their kilowatt hours for the month and meeting the dogs of the valley...everyone seems to have one, some are nice, some are mean. The plan is to work until late October and use that money to upgrade my touring rig, finance two new records worth of material, press up copies of each, and then hit the road again in 2013. I'd like to tour in Europe again in late fall, and I have a wedding gig to perform at in Cabo San Lucas in February. With new records in tow, I hope to tour the entire United States, Canada, and beyond before settling down again. I feel like this plan will do me good. Hopefully it will reaffirm my desire to be a professional musician again and to travel and perform as my primary source of income. I had a good run, about 9 years spent creating, recording and touring...but now is the time to re-charge my batteries, spend time with my parents as they enter retirement and a move to Arizona, and work hard so I can keep doing what I love to do. Thank you for your continued interest in my musical path and for checking in at this website. You will notice I have uploaded some older records in the music section for your listening enjoyment, and hopefully later this year you will be seeing even newer material. Cheers!

Today a fundraising campaign was launched to seek YOUR support in helping me reach my goal of putting out a few new records this year. Please click here for more details.

Been home now for about 10 days and I need about that amount of time to relax and get re-charged for the next phase of 2012, which is working on getting new music out to you. Had a lovely birthday, Superbowl Sunday, and Valentine's Day weekend with my lady. I am recording a Kris Kristoffersen song for a tribute album on PIAPTK soon with local bluegrass band Reilly Coyote. The song is Jody & The Kid. Working on the Grand Ole Hopry record and the next rock record, which I might call "Husky". Not sure yet. Who knows. I love being creative. Here's 15 minutes of video footage from the last tour compilied by Bryan Garfinkel. Enjoy.

We're in California! Had some great shows in Washington - New Years Eve was a blast. Tore through Seattle and Portland, Bend, Mt. Shasta and soon Redding, Nevada City, San Francsico, Los Angles, Phoenix, Tuscon, Prescott, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Pocatello and Boise. We've played some pretty fun shows and are having great weather and good times. Below is a little video from Monday night in Mt. Shasta, CA!

Playing tonight in Glacier, WA at Chair 9 for New Years Eve. We had so much fun last time we were there they asked us back for the big party. I've got an entirely different band backing me up now but I'm sure they will have a great time just as the last band did. We've learned 10 cover songs for the occasion - not exactly my forte, but I am excited to deliver them to the best of my ability. After this gig, we have about 16 shows down the western USA - Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City and more...check out tour dates for more info. Hope you all have a safe and happy holiday - see you next year!

Hello caring friend, writing from Hyde Park, Boise, Idaho, USA to wish you a very warm and happy holiday. I recorded a song a few years ago with friends in Kasilof, Alaska called "Merry Christmas (Get Back On Your Skiis)" and it was recently used on a holiday compilation called "Idaho Ho Ho" which is available in Idaho at all Moxie Java locations, and whose sales proceed the Idaho Food Bank. Pick up a copy and let me know what you think. There are some really great original tracks on the CD by Aaron Mark Brown, Reckless Kelly, Boise Rock School and I hope you find it elevates you into the winter.

I just wrapped up 3 months of touring and am back in Boise for a little bit of rest and relaxation. We made it to North Dakota, Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arizona, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark and Netherlands. How was it you ask? Just what my soul needed. I love playing music for people and the adventures of the road. I am looking forward to more touring soon, as we are headed out for a west coast jaunt starting December 28th, including a New Years Eve show in Glacier, Washington which we're really excited about. Wrapping up booking this week, but check out the dates here. Also I am excited to announce the lineup that will be touring with me: William Prescott on drums, Roy Swice on bass, and Justin Bricco on guitar. As always we are looking for a little help getting the word out with the shows and if you can hang up posters or anything like that, please drop us a line!

Hope to get a new album finished early next year - it's been awhile since Jersey Finger came out. The next record is a mix of old and new - songs like Dreams (Are All I Have), Sound Of The City, Come On Like A Light, Evil Grin, Working Overtime...etc. Swice has been at the helm so far helping me shape things up. I also haven't forgotten about my Grand Ole Hopry album, it's just on the backburner...but still have high hopes to record it sooner than later.

What else is in store for 2012? Well, a trip to SXSW is materializing, a tour with Jim Bianco and Cameron McGill is in the works, and my 33rd birthday. Love, Matt
